BURTIS DIES Following Long Illness El Paso Lady Succumbs Last Saturday Evening--Funeral Tuesday ---After intense suffering during a period of many months Mrs. John C.Burtis passed away at her home on south Sycamore street last Saturday evening just as day was closing. A combination of nerve trouble and rheumatism was later aded to by the development of a cancerous growth. For this latter malady she underwent an operation at a Peoria hospital a few months ago, but the relief was only temporary. Returning home she gradually grew worse and for some days before death came her sufferings were most distressing. Clara Perry was born in El Paso March 2, 1866, to Dr. James Madison Perry and Mrs. Emily (Gibson) Perry. The father practiced his profession in Pontiac, although residing here with his family. He died in 1869 when Clara was but 3 years old, leaving the widow and two children, Charles and Clara. Mrs. Perry died at the home of her daughter October 2, 1919, a little over three years ago. Charles is a resident of Dillon, Mont., where he is engaged in ranching on a tract between Dillon and Boulder. Clara was married to John C. Burtis January 19, 1888, since which time they have resided in the home where death came to her. Mr. Burtis is mail carrier on route l, a position which he has filled for a quarter century or more. Mrs. Burtis was a woman of fine character, a devoted wife and friend, and was held in the highest esteem by all her acquaintances. She was a communicant at St. Andrew's Episcopal church and a regular attendant on the services until illness came to prevent. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Rev. William Baker of Pontiac. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. Among those who attended the funeral service were Miss Lulu Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Johnson and son Hugh, Miss Helen Kay, all of Chicago; Rev. and Mrs. Smith, of Normal; Mrs. Elizabeth Kay of Peoria; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Burtis, Mrs. Leah Burtis and son Ralph of Hudson; Miss Nona Zausch of St. Louis; Mrs. Emma Burtis McCord of Denver, who is here to make her home with her sorrowing brother. All is as it appeared in the original.
